Life in the Country

.
With a few days off from work, we have been trying to get our self-sufficiency in order.
.
Our eggs were disappearing, and then one day Livvi stuck her hand into a nest box to retrieve an egg and a very large snake was eating it.
It was time for a new coop anyway, so we turned over the old one and found not one but two big snakes living underneath it. At first they looked like Timber Rattlers, then Cottonmouths, but I think they were actually Rat Snakes.
.
Here, Mike dispatches them in short order.

We took off the honey supers from the hive yesterday and ended up with about three gallons. Some of it was crystal clear Clover honey and some was darker Blackberry honey. Only got stung once.

So...you found your "egg thief"! We've had one of those in the past also! Nice that Mike could "take care of him". Pete never minds those dirty jobs :)

Have you ever read the African story where the farmer came up with a creative solution to the snake thief? He put a boiled egg in there and the snake couldn't break it. He got trapped in the hole that he entered in. It's a fun story.

I didn't know you had honey! You all are really homesteading! How rewarding!

God Bless!

So glad you found what was getting those eggs! Your honey looks delicious! Chris has many fond memories of his great Aunt and Uncle's bees in Tampa when we was growing up. His Uncle taught him alot about bees, as he was the chairman of the Hillsborough County BeeKeepers Society.
That is one of our "many" homesteading goals.
Looks like your experience has been a great success!
Enjoy it!
God bless your family!

Thank you for the comments!

We have really enjoyed housing bees. We wish we had about five more hives. Everyone can own a beehive no matter where you live; and local, raw honey fetches a high price nowadays.

Mike also waits for opportunities like the one above. His latest quest is coyotes.

I'm glad you got rid of those snakes. I'm sure the chickens are too!

Dear Powers Family,
I am hurriedly searching for articles on the War For Southern Independence on the numerous sites I have bookmarked. I would greatly appreciate some links if you have some.
Gratefully Yours,
